B.A. Honours (Ceylon), Ph. D. (London), Ph.D. Honoris Causa (Mahamakut:Thailand), D. Litt. Honoris Causa (Kelaniya) is Professor Emeritus of the University of Kelaniya, and a former Director of its Postgraduate Institute of Pali and Buddhist Studies. He was a Commonwealth Academic Staff Fellow (1974- 1975) and he served as Visiting Professor (1993) at SOAS, University of London, as Distinguished Numata Chair Professor at the University of Calgary (2001), as Tung Lin Kok Yuen Visiting Professor at the University of Toronto (2008), and as Visiting Professor at the University of Hong Kong, where he gave the first MaMa Charitable Lecture Series.
In 2005 he was decorated, by the President of Sri Lanka, with the title of Sri Lanka Sikhamani (Sri Lanka’s Precious Gem) for service to the nation.
Among his published works are: (1) The Buddhist Analysis of Matter, (2) Early Buddhist Teachings: The Middle Position in Theory and Practice, (3) The Theravada Abhidhamma: Inquiry into the Nature of Conditioned Reality (the latter two works are available in Chinese and Spanish translations as well), published by Wisdom Publications, USA, (4) The Dhamma Theory: Philosophical Cornerstone of the Abhidhamma: Buddhist Publication Society, Sri Lanka, and (5) Pali Atthakatha Correspondence Table: co-authored with Professor Sodo Mori and Professor T. Endo, Pali Text Society, Oxford 1994.
